The "Surge is Working" myth
I'm having a lot of fun with this one -- the suggestion that tactical military gains in Iraq are cause for opponents of the war to rethink their objections in the face of "progress." I have my own take on this, but what do you all think of the framing on it? Media seem to have bitten on the myth, and it's getting to be a problem.
time is a relative measure
How long must we wait until the "surge" can be evaluated? It was a distraction to start out with. There is no control experiment to show us what would have happened without the surge. Maybe things would have even been better.
There is one thing clear. Time is on the side of the Bush imperialist regime. We have resources and staying power. The people of Iraq are totally without an equivalent resource base to fight their war against the imperialist occupation. What is clear is that there is no political body in this coutry with the will to stop this. We see a lot of posturing by the democrats, but they will risk nothing. It has always been clear to me that the interests that benefit from a war of aggression like this are NOT divided along party lines. I distrust the democrats that were elected because they claimed to want to stop this war. I think they have an interest in its continuation and in the continued occupation. They have been opportunistic in using a very dogmatic imperial regime as a foil to gain power. If they wanted the war stopped they would have used their power to stop it. The country could be brought to a halt by stopping funding. They chose to not exercise this power.
Remember it was the democrats we were in the streets protesting against in the 60's. To be so naive as to believe that partisan politics will solve this mess is beyond my comprehension.
An example of how this dialog can go
Here's an exchange between myself and a neocon blogger I visit from time to time:

The dialog seems to have petered out. But I offer it as an artifact for analysis of this myth and its adherents.

New! Thanks for the question
