Reframing China

Created by glacier on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 10:21 AM

Reports of the latest Democratic debate mention talk about being "tough on China". To me, this seems jingoistic and sounds like conservative talk - clearly a strict-father approach. How can this be reframed from a progressive standpoint?

Thanks,

Luís.

Appeal to humanity

The progressive P.O.V. would be to emphasize our solidarity with all humanity, including the billions of Chinese citizens. They should have a right to the same sort of labor and workplace standards that we do, similar sorts of minimum wages and standards of living, they should be entitled to basic human rights. Let's create a global standard of living and working that respects humanity and nature over profit and control. Let's work together with the brains of China to create hope for a sustainable future - after all, the population of Beijing will feel the crunch of water shortage, heat waves, pollution, and post-disaster disaster before, say those in Montana do (likely). Let's put our heads together and work on a real global solution to our energy problems.
