A credit score is a frame
Isn't a credit score sort of an equivalent to a grade card in this country? Maybe the supposed free market would hit a glitch if suddenly no one cared about their credit score and made do without credit. A credit score and keeping your score "healthy" is all part of a frame that you should always be seeking the approval of and interacting with huge corporations. It shows your willingness to play their game.
