Govenor Schwarzenegger uses mass-transit metaphor to promote automakers

Wag of the Finger

Arnold Schwarzenegger

"I want to say: Get on board," said Schwarzenegger. "The train has left."

November 30, 2006

Although I agree with the goal of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, it was startling to see that Schwarzenegger (the guy who owns 5 Hum-vees) used a mass-transportation metaphor to promote an automakers product. When I think of a "train", I think of a pleasant experience of a group of people getting to the destination together. The quote was a bit insulting considering that the bond package that Schwarzenegger successfully promoted in the recent election heavily favored highway construction over mass-transportation.

That's a good example of language that conflicts with the substance of a politician's message. Besides, how can someone get on board, if the train has already left? Except in, say, an action movie.

I have created a new transportation tag and assigned it to this piece.
