Defending our tort system against right-wing attacks
For three decades, conservatives and corporations have been trying to immunize themselves against civil penalties by promoting a misleading agenda framed as tort “reform.”
For the past two years, the Georgia Civil Justice Foundation has been trying to reframe the debate by calling attention to the progressive values the civil justice system protects, among them fairness, trust, and safety. This reframing effort is in the form of seven clever animations the public can watch on the Foundation’s website: www.fairplay.org.
This week, the Foundation launched six brand new animations that tell how the tort system promotes American values and how the “reform” movement is trying to rig the rulebook of Fair Play.

New! concepts of justice
I like that the sponsoring foundation has the word "Justice" in its name. And I like the way they contrast fair play and foul play.
I suspect that the neo-cons' stealthy mission to undermine justice flies under our radar because the term "tort reform" means little to most people. I know I find myself thinking about dessert pastries even though I know what a legal tort is. And "reform", of course, has been hijacked by neo-cons as a camouflage frame.
These days the word "reform" puts me on alert. I now equate it with "rigged". I'm growing weary of hearing about so-called reforms that are really rigged, raw deals.
